Ostrich is the one hide that needs no pattern applied to it. The Outback is cut so the quill follicles run across the full face of the bag, dense through the centre and easing toward the smoother side panels, which is how the skin is naturally graded. The body is built square and holds its own shape, with rolled handles anchored on pointed tabs and polished silver at every fixing. Ostrich carries more natural oil than any other leather, which is why it stays supple and resists cracking for decades rather than years.

Brush the quill follicles with a soft dry brush, as dust settles into them. Condition once or twice a year with a product made for ostrich or exotic leather, never a standard leather cream, which darkens the follicles. Keep it away from water and blot any drops immediately, as spotting on ostrich can be permanent. Keep it out of heat and direct sunlight, which dry out the natural oils that keep the skin supple. Store upright in its dust bag, lightly stuffed and never compressed, so the raised quills are not flattened.
